Teacher Review: Yoga Flow – “Michelle Stanley”

Michelle Stanley yoga teacher

I have practiced yoga for around 12 years First making it onto a yoga mat in my mid 20s. I was a regular runner, and had been told I needed to take the time to stretch more so I should try yoga. Needless to say, I was pretty quickly hooked.

Many asanas later, a couple of years ago I felt that it was the right time to take the next step and allow yoga to become a much larger part of my life by deciding to train as a yoga teacher. I had come across Appleyoga at the Yoga Show in London several years before, and as luck / coincidence / the divine (whichever you prefer) would have it; was delighted to be given the opportunity to train with Katy Appleton on Appleyoga’s first ever YTT Course in 2010.

I have practised many styles of yoga over the years including Sivananda, Ashtanga, Restorative and Iyengar; out of all these my heart belongs to vinyasa flow yoga. My style of teaching very much reflects this, synchronizing breath with movement, and the AppleYoga methodology and philosophy that is my training.

I would describe my classes as informative, and fun! As an experienced massage therapist of over 10 years, there is an opportunity to explore an understanding of the physical mechanics of the body, and how yoga arises from this, from the inside out; rather than as an aesthetic art for the external observer.

For me, the spirit of yoga is not something beautiful for the outside onlooker to enjoy, we can go to the Ballet for that – instead, there is an opportunity to explore how actions are felt internally in the body, and how that resonates with the heart and mind.

In public classes the asana practice is designed with the needs of the stressed-out, desk-bound, city-living body in mind; they are challenging physically, whilst providing the time to relax, unwind and restore. One of the things that is really important to the way I teach is to recognize and work with where we really are, right now – not where we think we are. And that we practice mindfully, to welcome our limitations along with our abilities and strengths, not those that we think we should, or should not have.

I currently teach yoga flow classes in Dulwich (SE London), Clapham and Central London; and am also pleased to work privately with people in individual sessions, with small groups of individuals, and yoga for the workplace.

I am planning to further my study this year with a pre & post natal yoga training course in the Autumn, and am also delighted to be assisting on the Applecore 2011 Teacher Training Course.

I look forward to practicing with you, Namaste.
