Traditional and spiritual centre
Students are encouraged to practice regularly and attend weekend workshops to develop their yoga practice. Founded on tradition yoga practices, Satyananda Yoga uses asanas (postures) to balance the body and mind through the physical body, pranayama (breathing practices) to work on the energy body (equated with Ki or Chi in other systems), and meditation to calm and focus the mind.
The Satyananda Yoga Centre website is a great source of information about yoga, books, DVDs and free relaxation podcasts.
Home of Satyananda or Bihar Yoga
Every form of yoga has its own founder and guru. The founder of Satyananda (1923 – 2009) brought to life ancient yoga teachings and developed an integrated yoga system which incorporates practical philosophy and a wholistic lifestyle. The aim of Satyananda or Bihar Yoga is to reach harmony in life through practical means.
Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati has been Director of the Satyananda Yoga Centre (London) for over thirty years. Her interest in the spiritual path began in the sixties when she came into contact with the teachings of the Bihar School of Yoga and its founder, Swami Satyananda Saraswati. On Swamiji’s instructions she started teaching yoga in 1971 at her house in south London, which we now know as the Satyananda Yoga Centre.
Over the last twenty years Swami Pragyamurti’s main areas of work have included the establishment and teaching of a two year Yoga Teacher Training Course, working with people living with HIV/AIDS, and teaching yoga in prison where she feels strongly about the importance and relevance of yoga and meditation to the inmates.
Her warmth and wisdom demonstrate how the Indian tradition of Sannyasa can be integrated successfully with life in a busy Western city.
