Centre: “Indaba Yoga – Marylebone, Central London”

Indaba yoga marylebone

Yoga centre Indaba is a high quality yoga centre that is filling up with life. It has a strong and distinctive design – both reassuring and courageous. The teachers are well known across London for being experts in their disciplines.

  • The famous Stewart Gilchrist teaches Yogasana, a challenging class with lots of movement and fun in a heated room. He also teaches at the Light Centre, Belgravia.
  • Mark Khan teaches Dharma Mittra, a spiritual and all inclusive class which is not for those you don’t like inversions. I got cramps in my upper arms half way through the class but loved it anyway!
  • Lisa Sanfilipo is the most inspiring teacher of Anusara yoga currently in London, she also teaches at the Life Centre, Notting Hill

Many of the classes at Indaba are in the larger, heated room even if they are not publicised as a heated class. The heat is nothing compared to Bikram though and a bit of extra sweating is generally appreciated  by all students.

There is a great atmosphere at Indaba thanks to lovely people who work at reception, the experienced teachers, and students that follow.

“As yogis, we become artists of balance, consummate paradox-holders, and able to dive into what Carolyn Myss calls ‘the world behind our eyes’ and see how ‘what is outside is inside, and what is inside is outside’. That last bit is a favourite quote that encapsulates deep psychological truth and the Tantric vision, often used by my dear teacher Dr Douglas Brooks”

The Energy Anatomy of Home Practice- Tomorrow!
For Deep Sleep + Vibrant Days   Friday 11 March 2011   7.30pm – 9.30pm triyoga primrose hill   Explore the art of deep self-care and attentiveness through your yoga practice. Listen to the needs of your body, mind and soul with practices that fine-tune the mechanics of your body and attune to your energetic needs. You’ll do contrasting practice sequences with asana, pranayama, meditation and mantra that embody different methods of self-care, easy to incorporate into your daily life. We’ll delve into both practices, deep sleep and vibrant days, from perspectives that empower self-awareness:the bio-mechanical: muscles and bones, alleviating back pain, stuck shoulders or restless, tight hips and legs. the organic: supporting hormonal, digestive and other functions, including yoga for insomnia. the psychological: surfacing and releasing negative emotions (fear, anger, sadness, guilt, criticism and judgment) to spend more time in positive states of acceptance, joy, compassion, and gratitude.
the energetic: improving circulation, energy and vitality (called Prana) directing its flow through your body with movement, attention and intention.
Lisa credits the energy anatomy work of Caroline Myss and Anodea Judith and the practice of Anusara yoga through John Friend, Sianna Sherman + Elena Brower for their inspiration. More here

Teacher Nomination – Anusara Inspired Yoga – “Lisa Sanfillipo”

YOGI LONDON have received two nominations for Lisa in two days!

We at YOGI LONDON have had the pleasure taking her class before and can understand why she has so much support from her students. Thank you to Lisa for being such an inspiration in her practice and her life.

My Yoga teacher is compassionate, skilled and an excellent communicator.

I met her 2 1/2 years ago when I first came to London from the US. She had just given up a job as a policy analyst to teach yoga full-time. She gave up comparative riches and security for yoga, she believes in it so.

She teaches Anusara yoga and the tantric philosophy which is an important part of Anusara. Community is also an Anusara ideal and she has created an inclusive community of yoga practitioners of all ages and abilities.

She has inspired me to push beyond some of the limits which I had thought were absolute due to my age (61). Also she has emphasised the importance of meditation which has inspired me to meditate daily and she has helped me to establish a home practice for the days I can’t be in class.

She has awesome strength and can do amazing arm balance routines.

Nominated by: Susan

Lisa is a truly amazing human being; she teaches from a place of absolute love and offers light and laughter to her students.

I’ve had the honour of working with her when I was at a ‘yoga low’ and she completely re-ignited my fire for it, and I am now studying to teach yoga under her excellent guidance.

Through her teachings I have reached places in my physical body I never thought possible, and places in my mind I never dreamed of. All done with care and respect. Her ability to wrap physical asana with yoga philosophy into fun, creative and challenging classes is a real inspiration for anyone wanting to practice or teach. Her unwavering love for yoga is embodied in her style, her grace and her classes and gives those who come her classes something more than an hour’s stretch on a mat – she gives them an experience to take into their lives.

She is my mentor and friend and her inexhaustible compassion and undying love for yoga and her friends is why she is shining beacon of love and light.

Centre: West London – “The Life Centre, Notting Hill”

This is a very busy yoga centre because it is a beautiful place to practice. I found the receptionists (people seem to congregate around the reception) very welcoming although they are clearly very busy and run the place like the successful business that it is. You do have to get there reasonably early (or at least on time) to get in to the class but they don’t over pack the classes at least. I take busy classes only as a good sign.

Regular Yogis

Most people you seem coming and going look like they know what they’re doing because they do – there are many regulars who take a daily yoga class in their stride. I went to a few different teachers, some that I loved (Alexa Harris, Mark Hill, Kahti Goupil) but some other teachers did seem to be a bit rushed. The good thing is that, with two studios and many classes, there is almost always something good on to go to so its a great fall back plan if you feel a sudden urge to stretch out in a group.

Level 2 = Level 2

I thought that the standard of teaching was high. They clearly get enough regular goers to be able to teach a true level 2 when the class is billed as such. They don’t hang around for newbies and I think that’s right. Having said that, every class will be different, so find out more about the teacher before you turn up if you’re nervous, or a first-timer.

Mini Yoga Retreat in London
